Su Marte luoghi analoghi alla Terra? Se ne parla a Varese

VARESE – Continua all’Università degli Studi dell’Insubria la sesta edizione del ciclo di incontri “Scienza & fantascienza”, organizzato dal professor Paolo Musso del Dipartimento di scienze teoriche e applicate, in collegamento col suo corso di “Scienza e fantascienza nei media e nella letteratura”. Dopo il primo incontro tenuto il mese scorso da Giuseppe Lippi, curatore emerito di Urania Mondadori, e dall’esperta di Schiaparelli Anna Lombardi, il ciclo prosegue mercoledì 14 novembre alle 15 nell’aula magna dell’Università dell’Insubria, via Ravasi 2 a Varese, con l’incontro “Marte a casa nostra: gli analoghi terrestri”, tenuto dagli astrobiologi Rosalba Bonaccorsi, dell’Ames Research Center della Nasa, e Julio Valdivia, presidente della Società di astrobiologia del Perù.

“Il tema di questo incontro a prima vista potrebbe sembrare un po’ astruso – dice Musso – ma in realtà è molto appassionante e in certi casi perfino divertente. Si tratta, in poche parole, di trovare delle zone della Terra che presentino caratteristiche il più possibile analoghe a quelle di Marte, in modo da poterle usare per provare in anticipo gli strumenti che dovranno poi essere spediti su Marte e gli esperimenti che dovranno eseguire. Ce ne parlerà Rosalba Bonaccorsi, astrobiologa italiana che lavora da anni al prestigioso Ames Research Center, uno dei laboratori più famosi della Nasa, che oltre ad essere una grande scienziata è anche una straordinaria divulgatrice, grazie alla sua passione travolgente e al suo senso dell’umorismo (siamo amici da tantissimi anni ed è una delle persone più divertenti che conosco). Uno dei più celebri analoghi terrestri di Marte è il deserto di Atacama, il luogo più arido del mondo, situato tra Cile e Perù (dove però, per campanilismo, lo chiamano deserto de La Joya). Qui tra l’altro è in corso un incredibile esperimento che ha come scopo di produrre, a partire da una varietà di patata scelta con estrema cura tra le oltre 4000 presenti nel paese, una vera e propria “super-patata” capace di crescere perfino in un luogo così arido e quindi – si ha ragione di supporre – anche su Marte, in modo da fornire cibo fresco agli astronauti il giorno che finalmente ci andremo”. Prosegue: “Ce ne parlerà un’altra persona straordinaria, che ho conosciuto durante i miei periodi di visiting professor a Lima: Julio Valdivia, presidente della Società di astrobiologia del Perù, che qualche anno fa ha deciso di lasciare una posizione molto promettente all’interno della Nasa per tornare in Perù per aiutare lo sviluppo della ricerca scientifica nel suo paese. E a quanto pare ci sta riuscendo, visto che il progetto della super-patata sta dando risultati superiori perfino alle più rosee aspettative”.

A seguire, il 21 novembre alle 14,30 al liceo scientifico statale “Arturo Tosi” di Busto Arsizio ci sarà l’incontro su Marte nel cinema e nel fumetto, con la partecipazione di Antonio Serra e Oskar Scalco della Sergio Bonelli Editore e del celebre critico cinematografico Mauro Gervasini. Quindi il 5 dicembre alle 15 nell’aula magna dell’Insubria di via Ravasi 2 ci sarà l’incontro finale, con la partecipazione della biologa e scrittrice di fantascienza Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli, degli scienziati Enrico Flamini dell’Università di Chieti-Pescara e Roberto Orosei dell’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, scopritori del primo lago marziano, e di Piero Benvenuti, segretario generale uscente della International Astronomical Union.
