L’inizio delle indagini risale a poco più di un anno fa quando, nella notte di Natale del 2018 quando un cittadino indiano si presentava al commissariato della polizia di Stato a Gallarate riferendo di essere appena stato derubato da due cittadini italiani. Dal racconto del trentaseienne indiano appariva subito chiara la tipica truffa “rip deal”. L’uomo aveva infatti raccontato di aver versato 3,24001 Bitcoin sul portafoglio elettronico di due sedicenti cittadini italiani dietro la promessa di un cambio in contanti estremamente favorevole, ammontante a 14 mila e 900 euro. Durante l’incontro, avvenuto a Gallarate, i truffatori riuscivano effettivamente a convincere l’imprudente investitore mostrandogli il denaro pattuito per il cambio, ordinato in mazzette all’interna di una valigetta, poi rivelatosi carta straccia. Avvenuto lo scambio, l’indiano veniva frettolosamente invitato a scendere dalla vettura che aveva ospitato la transazione, una Citroen guidata da un terzo complice ma intestata ad un prestanome. Contattato nuovamente, pochi giorni dopo la prima truffa, con la promessa della restituzione del maltolto, al giovane indiano venivano fraudolentemente sottratti ulteriori 10 bitcoin(60 mila euro circa all’epoca dei fatti), questa volta all’aeroporto di Linate.

Avviate immediatamente le indagini, condotte dagli uomini della Sezione investigativa del commissariato di Gallarate e coordinate dalla procura di Busto Arsizio, si è riusciti ad individuare gli autori dell’episodio sopra descritto e smantellare una vera e propria organizzazione composta da quattro nomadi di etnia rom (3 italiani ed un tedesco) specializzata nelle truffe “rip deal”. Un secondo episodio è stato infatti riscontrato dagli agenti, vittima un italiano a cui sono stati sottratti 18 bitcoin (70 mila euro circa all’epoca dei fatti) in un albergo nella zona dell’aeroporto di Milano Malpensa. Erano proprio le sale convegno degli alberghi nella zona dell’aeroporto di Malpensa, i luoghi privilegiati dai truffatori, che prenotavano sotto falso nome.

Le perquisizioni effettuate a carico degli indagati hanno suggellato l’ipotesi investigativa degli agenti che hanno rinvenuto tutti gli strumenti del mestiere: due valige contenenti banconote fac-simile prevalentemente da 100 euro, ma anche da 500 euro (per circa 1,5 milioni di euro) e, molteplici stampe a colori da 1000 franchi svizzeri, due macchinette conta soldi ed anche uno smartphone utilizzato per comunicare con le vittime attraverso una chat Telegram denominata “Bitcoin news”.
